Greens Approve Coalition, Sets Stage For Scholz Swearing-In Wednesday

Green party members approved the coalition agreement put to them in an online vote by a margin of 86% to 12% clearing the final hurdle to the swearing in of Social Democrat Olaf Scholz as chancellor on Wednesday.

  • Over the weekend the Greens two partners in the 'traffic light' coalition, the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) and the liberal pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) each approved the coalition agreement at special party congresses.
  • The Bundestag will hold a confirmatory vote for Scholz and his Cabinet on Wednesday, which will pass with ease. The coalition will hold 416 seats in the 736-member chamber.
