Group Demands Vessel Change Course in Bab al-Mandab Strait

British maritime security company Ambrey said Dec. 14 that there are reports of a group claiming to be the “Yemeni Navy”, according to Reuters.

  • The group is demanding that a vessel currently sailing in the Bab al-Mandeb strait change course and head for Yemen.
  • This is an indication of further escalation and threats to maritime security in the Red Sea, one of the world’s key shipping channels.
  • Tension has risen after the Houthis have sought to support Hamas in its war in Gaza by firing missiles at Irael and attacking ships.
  • A missile fired from rebel-controlled Yemen missed a container ship in Bab el-Mandeb Strait according to AP News reports - citing a US defense official.
  • Two missiles were fired from the territory at a jet fuel tanker on Wednesday and another at a Norwegian flagged tanker in the Red Sea Monday.
