Half of Red Sea Container Fleet Avoiding Suez

FREIGHT

Half of the container ships which regularly transit the Red Sea and Suez Canal are avoiding the area because of the risk of attack, according to Bloomberg.

  • According to Flexport data, 299 vessels have changed course or intend to. This is double the number from the previous week. This will add around 25% to the journey time between Asia and Europe.
  • According to Clarksons Research data, arrivals into the Gulf of Aden fell 40% between Dec. 22-26 compared with the average for H1 Dec. Container freight arrivals are down 87% while gas tankers are down 30%.
  • Suez Transits are down 45% from Dec. 22-26 for vessels heading South, compared to H1 Dec.
  • However, 15 container vessels, 10 of them operated by Maersk, have maintained course or abandoned diversion plans from the Red Sea.
