SECURITY

AFP reporting that, according to a Hamas official, the Palestinian militant group expects a "swift Israeli response" - likely today or tomorrow - to the new ceasefire proposal submitted by Hamas this week.

  • AFP reports that Hamas senior official Osama Hamdan, "insisted that the group's military wing remains "in a good condition" to keep up the nine-month-old war. Hamdan said there were no new concrete proposals in a document sent to Israel this week but "some ideas were proposed to overcome" Israeli reticence about a ceasefire. "We are waiting to hear a response, likely today or tomorrow morning," he said."
  • A Israeli delegation led by Mossad director David Barnea arrives in Doha today in line with authorisation granted by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following a 30-minute call with US President Joe Biden yesterday.
  • A Gaza ceasefire is of acute importance as tensions between Israel and Lebanon-based Hezbollah threaten to expand into a full-blown war. This week Hezbollah launched two major rocket assaults on Israel in retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah senior commander, Mohammed Naameh Nasser, on Wednesday.
  • Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Sheikh Naim Qassem, said in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday: “If there is a ceasefire in Gaza, we will stop without any discussion.”
