CROATIA
CROATIA: Head of the centre-left Social Democrats (SDP) Davor Bernardic has
resigned following the poor result for the SDP-led 'Restart' coalition in the
July 5 general election.
- Restart won a total of 41 seats in the 151-member parliament, down 4 from the
previous election in 2016. The 24.9% vote share was the lowest for the main
centre-left coalition in Croatia since 2003.
- The incumbent centre-right Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) of Prime Minister
Andrej Plenkovic retained its plurality, winning 66 seats, an increase of 5.
- The HDZ will still require the support of at least one other party to form a
majority gov't.
- Coming 3rd in the election was a new party, the right-wing nationalist
Miroslav Skoro Homeland Movement (DPMS), which won 16 seats.
