Health Min Panel Approves Moderna, OAZ Vaccines To Speed Up Rollout

A Japanese health ministry panel has approved the use of the Moderna and Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines for use in the country, in a move that should speed up Japan's relatively slow rollout so far.

  • The Health Ministry itself is set to give its final sign-off tomorrow.
  • PM Yoshihide Suga previously said all elderly Japanese will be inoculated by end-July, but 14 prefectures have already stated they are likely to miss this target.
  • With a slow vaccine rollout, major risks to the hosting of the already-delayed Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer, and poor results in recent by-elections the Suga gov't is under significant pressure.
