MNI BRIEF: Fed's Powell - Neutral Rate Has Risen Meaningfully
MNI (WASHINGTON) - The neutral rate in the United States has risen "meaningfully" since before the pandemic, Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell told members of Congress Tuesday.
"My own view and there are many different views on this is that the neutral rate will have risen meaningfully -- it's very hard to be precise about it -- from what it was. It was clearly very, very low before the pandemic," Powell told senators. "I think it has moved up. And many of my colleagues on the FOMC feel that way too," he said.
The FOMC's most recent projections in December showed a median longer-run neutral rate of 3.0%, with a range from 2.4% to 3.9%.
