Health Official Warns Of 100k/Cases Per Day As CDU Continues To Plummet

Prof. Lothar Wieler, head of the Robert Koch Institute, has warned that that the country could end up recording 100,000 new COVID-19 cases per day if the current rates of infection are not curbed. New cases peaked at around 25,000 new cases per day during the second-wave peak in late-December.

  • Health Minister Jens Spahn stated that the gov't is 'still assessing the situation in France' with regards to travel bans, and that the country's alert level will be raised if the number of new cases continues to increase.
  • The escalating COVID-19 situation is continuing to do damage to Chancellor Angela Merkel's centre-right Christian Democratic Union. The latest nationwide poll, from FGW, shows a sharp decline in party support since the outlet's last poll in February.

  • Speaking to the Bundestag on Wednesday, Chancellor Merkel sought to take all the blame for the rise in cases and confusion regarding restrictions on her shoulders, asking for the forgiveness of the German people. However, it seems the electorate is associating her party with the escalating COVID-19 situation, resulting in a continued slide in support for the centre-right.
