Hernando As Mining Minister May Indicate Position On Copper And Lithium

Chilean President-Elect Gabriel Boric has named Marcela Hernando as mining minster in his new cabinet today.

  • The election campaign saw some speculation on how a Boric administration would approach mining. Boric initiated suggested that nationalising key resources might be on the agenda. In December he spooked investors pledging to create a state-owned lithium company. He has since rolled back on that pledge.
  • The appointment of Hernando from the centrist Radical Party, as part of a more moderate cabinet than many predicted, may calm investors. Hernando has spoken in favour of greater regulatory oversight of the mining sector but has not suggested that nationalising is the way forward.
