Wires carrying comments from Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. Says that the 'battle with Israel has entered a new phase', and that Israel 'does not know who what extent it has crossed the red lines'. Nasrallah says that the Israeli response to any Hezbollah attack will determine if war escalates.
- Nasrallah says countries have asked Hezbollah not to respond to the Israeli strike on Beirut that killed one of the group's senior commanders Fuad Shukr. Nasrallah: 'group has enough commanders to fill any gap'. Says Hezbollah would have admitted if it had made a 'mistake' that led to the killing of a group of youths in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
- Separately, Barak Ravid at Axios says according to an aide to PM Benjamin Netanyahu, the PM will speak to US President Joe Biden later today about escalation in the region.
- Netanyahu: "Israel on very high readiness for any scenario, will exact heavy price for any act of aggression against us from any front"
At present the region sits in a wait-and-see mode, with expectation that Iran will launch directly or through proxies an attack on Israel. However, the nature and scale of this attack could prove pivotal in determining how far the escalation between Israel and Iran/Hezbollah goes.
