The US House of Representatives will shortly resume voting for the next speaker following three ballots yesterday which failed to deliver the gavel to GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

  • McCarthy notable failed to reduce the vote deficit against him over the three votes with all signs pointing to a protracted battle which is unlikely to be resolved even if McCarthy manages to get over the line.
  • There are serious implications for the fate of crucial legislation like raising the debt ceiling looming in the summer, and further aid to Ukraine.
  • Republican quarrelling will be welcomed by Democrats who ring in the new year in a position of comparative strength and will be pushing hard to maintain for a full caucus for the duration of voting minimizing the risk of Democrat fatigue offering a pathway to the speaker’s gavel for McCarthy.
  • Early this morning, former President Donald Trump called on rebels to drop the blockade and vote in favour of McCarthy.
