The House of Representatives has approved the bill re-authorising the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) in a 213-208 procedural vote that came out along party lines. Earlier in the week a version of the bill was defeated after 19 Republican lawmakers aligned with Democrats in rejecting the legislation. In the latest vote five Republicans did not vote, with none voting against.
- CNN: "The new version of the bill would be a two-year reauthorization instead of five years, meaning that if former President Donald Trump won the presidential election this year, the legislation would be up in time for Trump to overhaul FISA laws next time around."
- GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump came out against FISA's renewal earlier in the week, leading to a backlash from some Republican senators. Trump called on Republican congressmen to 'kill FISA', but without its passage the US' intelligence services would lose much of their ability to carry out clandestine surveillance and operations on the country's enemies, posing a major security risk.
