The House Rules Committee is due to meet shortly to consider a Continuing Resolution to fund federal government agencies through the general election. The committee will also consider four pieces of legislation related to China - seen as a rare area of bipartisan consensus during the pre-election period, when legislative action is expected to be limited. Committee details.
- House Speaker Mike Johnson intends to procede with a plan for a six-month CR that extends funding through March. He will also attach a partisan bill on 'voter rights' to the package that is certain to be rejected by the Senate.
- House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) described the plan today as "unserious and unacceptable." Jeffries said the only way to avoid a government shutdown on October 1 was to pass a "short-term" funding bill through December and scrap "partisan policy changes inspired by Trump's Project 2025."
- Jake Sherman at Punchbowl News notes that Rep Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Rep Matt Rosendale (R-MO) have signalled they will vote no on the CR on the floor: "5 Dems voted yes last time on SAVE. So the math is tight but Rs have some room to maneuver."
- Sherman adds: "Question here is multifaceted: who wants to vote for a bill that has no chance of going anywhere. Where will dems be? And how big is the “no CR” caucus"
