House Speaker Pelosi To Visit Taiwan Next Month: FT

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will visit Taiwan next month to show her support for Taipei amid mounting pressure from China, the Financial Times reports.

  • Pelosi's previous trip was planned for April, but had to be called off as she caught COVID-19.
  • She would the the most senior U.S. official to visit Taiwan since Republican Speaker Newt Gingrich travelled to the island in 1997.
  • "Three people familiar with the situation said the White House had expressed concern about the trip. The timing is sensitive for China because it will come in the same month as the August 1 anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army."
