House Speaker Rota Resigns After Zelensky Visit Flap

CANADA
(MNI) OTTAWA
  • Anthony Rota said Tuesday he’s resigning effective tomorrow after he led Justin Trudeau and Zelensky on Friday in a standing ovation of a World War II veteran later identified as fighting for Nazis in Ukraine.
  • Political fallout does more damage to Trudeau’s Liberal government already trailing Conservatives in the polls. Rota and Trudeau have said Rota acted alone on the invitation and ovation.
  • Speakers mostly referee debates in the House so little direct impact on lawmaking. Leaders of other parties holding a majority of seats called for his removal; Rota is a Liberal lawmaker from northern Ontario.
