House To Vote On Suspending Normal Trade Relations With Russia

The House of Representatives will today take up a bill to suspend normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus. The bill is titled: 'Suspending Normal Trade Relations with Russia and Belarus Act'

  • Last week, a vote passed to ban imports of Russian oil but this bill pushes further and would put Russia in a group with Cuba and North Korea, the only countries to not have normal trade relations with the United States.
  • The move that would also allow the US to impose higher tariffs on Russian goods. The bill states: 'The President may proclaim increases in the rates of duty applicable to products of the Russian Federation or the Republic of Belarus.'
  • The bill also reads: 'The United States cannot allow the consequences of the Russian Federation’s actions to go unaddressed, and must lead fellow countries, in all forms, including the WTO, to impose appropriate consequences for the Russian Federation’s aggression.'
