Housing Starts Maintain Relative Strength

  • Housing starts were broadly as expected in November, falling by less than expected to 264.2k (cons 259k) but from a slightly downward revised 264.6k (initial 267k).
  • The -0.2% M/M decline does nothing to change the fact that starts continue to hold up at a much stronger relative level than existing home sales compared to pre-pandemic levels [see chart], which at the margin should help alleviate some house price pressures.
  • The 2bp rise in GoC front end yields likely reflected reaction to the concurrent hawkish ECB statement, whilst US retail sales and other releases hit in five minutes.
