Housing Starts Surge Back Higher On Multi-Units

  • Housing starts surprisingly jumped 41% M/M in June to 281k (cons 220k) after a marginally downward revised 200k in May (initial 202.5k).
  • Market impact is limited a) coming just ahead of CPI and b) with it coming entirely from multiple starts (+55% M/M) whilst single-detached starts nudged up just 1% M/M.
  • GoCs initially saw very little move have now sold off by 1-1.5bps and USDCAD dips lower but ultimately continues to hold around 1.32.
  • It is however the sort of report that can add to the day's moves, especially if followed by a stronger CPI print after the BoC noted the pick-up in housing activity.
