Houthis-US & UK Strikes 'Will Not Go Unanswered'

MIDEAST

Following another set of joint US/UK airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen on the night of 22 Jan, wires carrying comments attributed to the Houthis stating that the strikes "will not go unanswered". Political bureau member Mohammed al-Bukhaiti said, “We will continue our military operations against the Zionist enemy no matter how aggressively they might bombard Yemen.”

  • The Pentagon said in a statement that eight sites were hit, with multiple targets struck at each site. This marks the eighth US set of strikes since the initial retaliatory mission on 11 Jan, and the second time that the UK has taken part alongside US forces.
  • The NYT reports that the strikes were smaller than the initial Jan 11 salvoes, that hit around 60 targets at 30 sites, but larger than strikes in the interim, which targeted missiles ready to fire into the Red Sea. Last night's strikes are said to have "hit radars, as well as drone and missile sites and underground weapons storage bunkers,"
  • "This middle ground reflects the administration’s attempt to chip away at the Houthis’ ability to menace merchant ships and military vessels but not hit so hard as to kill large numbers of Houthi fighters and commanders, and potentially unleash even more mayhem into a region already teetering on the edge of a wider war."
