IAEA's Grossi Meets w/Zelenskyy In Zaporizhzhia

UKRAINE

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi has confirmed that he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Zaporizhzhia City earlier today. Grossi states that they had a 'rich exchange' on the protection of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and its staff. Grossi says that he reiterated his 'full support' for Ukraine's nuclear facilities.

  • Unconfirmed reports that Grossi will visit the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which sits in territory occupied by Russian forces and claimed as part of Russia by Moscow, later this week.
  • The position of the plant so close to the front lines means there is significant concern about the potential impact of errant shelling or direct conflict within the area. Moreover, the intermittent power supply to the plant, reliant on diesel generators, raises concerns of a nuclear fuel meltdown if the six reactors cannot be supplied with coolant in the long term.
