ICIS Forecast EU Gas Storage Depleted by March

NATURAL GAS

According to ICIS modelling, if European gas demand is not forced lower – either by market forces or by policy interventions – European storage will totally deplete by the end of March, even if Russian pipe flows remained, albeit at a low level.

  • While stocks will have been able to climb to 80% capacity by 1 November, an aggressive draw-down through the first quarter of 2023 would have knock-on effects for spring and the rest of 2023.
  • Although demand at the start of August was already seen to be falling away in response to rocketing prices – with the benchmark ICIS TTF at €222/MWh at the time of writing – falls in consumption so far suggest that additional non-market drivers would be needed to achieve 15% cuts.
