US
US: Impeachment trial of President Donald Trump begins today in the Senate.
- Senate reconvenes after MLK Day holiday at 1230ET (1730GMT, 1830CET). Briefs
from both the prosecution and defence will have been submitted, and the 100
senators will be in their seats.
- Today's session will last from 1300-1830ET (1800-2330GMT, 1900-0030CET).
- It will be used for setting out the order of business via a resolution. Laid
out by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), the resolution will set
out the trial schedule and any other procedural matters. He could also seek a
motion to dismiss the charges, ending the trial before it starts in earnest.
- Motion will not be debated by senators, who have to remain silent, but by
impeachment managers from the House and White House's defence team.
- After 2 hours of debate, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will be
able to submit amendments to McConnell's resolution. This is likely to include
allowing witnesses to be called as part of the trial.
- Following this, another 2 hours is provided for debate, divided equally. Once
concluded, senators will vote on the resolution and any amendments.
