EU: In comments regarding the new security legislation imposed on Hong Kong
yesterday and the subsequent protests, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen
and German Chancellor Angela Merkel offered a relatively restrained condemnation
of the actions of Beijing.
- In comparison to the US and UK, which have already launched actions in the
form of sanctions from the former and an offer of potential citizenship for some
Hongkongers from the latter, von der Leyen and Merkel instead stressed a need
for a continued dialogue with China. 
- While both said there must be conversation on China's human rights record,
they both stressed the need for Beijing's cooperation in combating climate
change and improving global trade links.
