Income Tax Collection Increases, Tensions Remain At Top Copper Mine

  • Tensions continue to rise at one of Peru’s top copper operations as workers vowed to start a hunger strike and a government official criticized the mine’s approach to community relations.
    • With operations at MMG Ltd.’s Bambas halted for almost a month amid protests, workers will begin a hunger strike on Wednesday, union leader Erick Ramos told radio station Exitosa. On the same day, Foreign Trade Minister Roberto Sanchez said the Chinese owner is paying the price for a piecemeal approach to unrest in the past.
    • “MMG resolved each conflict with financial compensation, giving millions here and there, instead of creating a lasting community relationship strategy”.
