Increasing Wildfires Stall Canada Gas Production Recovery

NATURAL GAS

The recovery in western Canadian natural gas production has stalled this week with a renewed increase in wildfires across Alberta.

  • Total Canadian gas production was estimated at 17.7bcf/d on June 7 compared to a peak of more than 18bcf/d in late May and about 18.5bcf/d in Jan to Apr before the outbreak of wildfires according to legacy IHS PointLogic data from S&P Global.
  • Pipeline exports to the US have rebounded to an average of 5 Bcf/d despite the production decline and after a brief drop to 3.5bcf/d in late May.
  • A total of 64 wildfires are currently active compared to just 51 on 26 May according to the Alberta Wildfire Status Dashboard with hot and dry conditions an ongoing risk to oil and gas production.
  • Various companies including Cenovus Energy, Crescent Point and Paramount Resources have safely restored output recently following outages last month.
