India Announces Plans To Increase Wheat Exports As Prices Surge

INDIA

India has announced plans to increase wheat exports to 10 million metric tons to fill the shortfall caused by the war in Ukraine.

  • Wheat prices recently hit record highs amid wider fears of a global food price crisis. Russia and Ukraine are the world's leading wheat exporters so signals from India may cool booming prices.
  • The price hike has made Indian wheat a more credible export product. Sudhanshu Pandey, secretary of food and public distribution said India was on track to export seven million metric tons of wheat for the fiscal year ending March 31, compared with two million metric tons last year.
  • He said preparations are in place for at least 10 million metric tons of wheat for the next fiscal year.
