India Non-Committal On Putin Attending G20 Leaders’ Summit

G20

The Hindustani Times reports that India’s Ministry of External Affairs has been “non-committal” on the participation of specific leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, at the G20 Leaders’ Summit taking place in India, September 9-10.

  • External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said: "This is a physical summit and we would hope that all the invitees are able to participate in-person for this summit."
  • Bagchi confirmed that New Delhi has sent invitations to all the G20 member states, the nine guest countries and international organisations but stated: "There have been confirmations, I understand, but again I don't have any specific response on any particular leader."
  • This week, the South African presidency announced that Putin wouldn’t attend the upcoming BRICs summit in Johannesburg, August 22-24 after weeks of speculation that Pretoria would be obliged to arrest Putin in accordance with an ICC warrant, should he attend the summit.
  • Unlike South Africa, India is not a signatory to the Rome Statute and would be under no such obligations.
