INDONESIA: Early Count Shows Prabowo's Candidate Lagging In Jakarta Gov Elex

INDONESIA

Pramono Anung of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) edged ahead of his main rival Ridwan Kamil supported by President Prabowo Subianto's Advanced Indonesia Coalition (KIM) in the race to become the governor of Jakarta, the key battleground in Indonesia's local and regional elections.

  • The regional elections came as part of this year's electoral marathon, which involved combined parliamentary and presidential elections in February. The winner of the presidential race, Prabowo Subianto, officially replaced Joko Widodo at the end of October.
  • Since the double election, Prabowo managed to build a broad coalition in parliament, which does not feature any classical opposition. The closest to such status is the largest party PDI-P, which last month declared support for the government, albeit only in a somewhat vaguely defined "confidence and supply" mode, without assuming cabinet seats.
  • Jakarta stands out among Indonesian regions in operating a slightly different electoral system for its gubernatorial election. In the capital, in the event no candidate secures a simple majority of votes, a run-off between two best contenders is scheduled for a later data, whereas in other regions it is sufficient to get a plurality of votes to win the race.
  • Bloomberg reported that Pramono Anung took an early lead with 48%-50% of the vote, edging ahead of Ridwan Kamil with 39%-41%. This would suggest that Pramono was on the verge of winning the race in first round, which would be a setback for President Prabowo Subianto and his preferred candidate.
  • Although regional elections are less consequential than national polls, key gubernatorial races are closely watched as a proxies of the ongoing power struggle between Prabowo's KIM and Megawati Soekarnoputri’s PDI-P. Furthermore, Jakarta governorship is widely regarded as a stepping stone to most senior positions in national politics.
