Initial Claims Rise In Minnesota But Not The Sole Driver

  • After recent cases of fraudulent claims in Massachusetts that have since been revised away, analysts have been sensitive to individual state developments behind the last two higher than expected initial claims releases.
  • Last week’s release saw Ohio account for more than half of the non-seasonally adjusted increase, which it held to in level terms in today’s report.
  • This week saw a broader range of states behind the +29k increase in NSA claims, with Minnesota in second place at +3.7k is getting some attention.
  • Minnesota claims have increased to 9.2k from 5.5k in the week to Jun 2 from a string of 3k readings prior to that, a decent increase on the week but still a low outright level. It doesn’t look like fraud though: @aaronsojourner “Minnesota […] may be partially attributable to a new law that expanded UI system to include many school employees experiencing summer layoff.”
