Iran's Khamenei To Erdogan: Syria Strike Would Destabilise Region

Reuters carrying comments from Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan following their bilateral talks in Tehran. Khamenei told the Turkish leader that 'Any military strike on Syria will harm the region and will benefit terrorists'. States that Iran will assist Turkey in fighting terrorism in Syria.

  • Turkey has been an active military participant in northern Syria in recent years, launching four operations in the region since 2016 in an effort to expand 20-mile 'safe zones' along the border with Turkey.
  • Comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives in Tehran for tripartite talks w/Erdogan and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on the situation in Syria.
  • Major international focus, though, on Putin and Erdogan regarding a potential deal on getting grain exports out of Ukraine. With talks going on in Istanbul between reps from Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, and the UN no major details expected at presidents' meeting. Nevertheless, any comment on the issue likely to be seized upon.
  • Also focus on Putin and Raisi, with US warning of Iran potentially set to supply drones to Russia. US gov't has described this prospect as a major regional concern.
