MIDEAST: Iranian state media confirms a successful test of short and long-range
cruise missiles in the Gulf of Oman.
- The US is seeking to extend a UN arms embargo on Iran, which is due to expire
in October following the signing of the JCPOA in 2015, which the US has
subsequently withdrawn from.
- Iranian media reports the missiles have a range of 280km, following an
unverified claim in April that the top range of its naval missiles was 700km.
- European signatories of JCPOA seeking to push Russia and china to agree to a
limited arms embargo on Iran in what is being billed as a compromise the US may
accept.
- If no agreement is reached it puts the US at odds with Russia and China on yet
another front, with the latter two likely to be the primary providers of
military materiel to Iran if the embargo is lifted.
