Iraq Working on Repairing Alternative Pipeline to ITP

OIL

Iraq is working on repairing a pipeline that could allow it to send 350kbd to Turkey by the end of the month according to Reuters reports from an Iraqi oil minister on Monday.

  • The Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline has been shut for a decade after Islamic State attacks in 2014.
  • Baghdad deems production-sharing agreements between the Kurds and foreign companies using the KRG's pipeline illegal Reuters reports.
  • "Repair works are ongoing and a major crude pumping station with storage facilities has been completed. The pipeline is likely to be operational and ready to restart flows by the end of this month," Basim Mohammed, Iraqi deputy oil minister for upstream affairs, told Reuters.
  • The Iraq-Turkey oil pipeline (ITP) which once handled about ~0.5% of global oil supply has been halted, stuck in legal and financial limbo, since March 2023. It has numerous false starts, but a number of issues have held it back.
  • Restarting a competing pipeline is likely to cause issue for any party reliant on the revenue from the ITP pipeline.
