IRELAND: Support Plunges For Harris' Fine Gael In Final Days Of Campaign

IRELAND

A new opinion poll from Ipsos B&A for the Irish Times shows Taoiseach (PM) Simon Harris' centre-right Fine Gael (FG) recording a slump in support just days ahead of the 29 November general election. The poll has FG on 19% support, marking a six per cent decline in the 10 days since the last Ipsos B&A poll. A public gaffe involving Harris being publicly rebuked by disability support worker has dominated headlines for days and has threatened to derail the FG campaign.

  • While FG still sits within the margin of error behind Tainaste (Deputy PM) Micheal Martin's centrist Fianna Fail (FF, 21%) and the main opposition Irish republican Sinn Fein (SF, 20%), such a sharp decline in a short period of time has sent shockwaves through an election campaign that previously had little jeopardy.
  • Most opinion polling in the run-up to the election has shown FG leading, with FF in second and SF in third. As such, a resumption of the incumbent FF-FG-Green coalition was seen as a possibility. However, should the FG slump prove sustained then, alongside a reduction in support for the Greens, this coalition could fall short of a majority.
  • This would leave FG and FF potentially looking to draw the centre-left Social Democrats and Labour parties into a coalition, or seek to cross the majority threshold with independents. While SF may perform better than recent polling has indicated, it remains unlikely that they will be able to find enough willing partners to form a majority gov't.
  • The final televised debate of the campaign between Harris, Martin, and SF leader Mary Lou McDonald takes place on Tuesday 26 November. It will be broadcast on RTE at 2135GMT (1635ET, 2235CET).
