IRGC Ally Amir-Abdollahian Confirmed As Foreign Minister

IRAN

Kian Sharifi at BBC Monitoring tweets: "Iran's parliament has voted 270-10 (6 abstentions) to confirm Hossein Amir-Abdollahian as the next foreign minister. With the exception of Baghgoli for education minister, every one of President Raisi's picks was confirmed today by the parliament."

  • Amir-Abdollahian is viewed as having close links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, and in particular its late leader Qasem Soleimani, who was assassinated in a US drone strike in 2018, as well as the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
  • Ali Hasem in Al Monitor describes Amir-Abdollahian as being "...thought to be the first fully fledged Khameneist to hold the position, in the sense of adhering to the goals of Iran's revolution while taking a pragmatic approach to foreign policy."
