IRGC Spox-Iran Weighing Response To Israel, May Not Match Previous Ops

MIDEAST

Reuters reports comments from Iran's Revolutionary Guards spokesperson Alimohammad Naini regarding a response to the killing of Hamas' Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month. Says "Time is in our favour and the waiting period for this response could be long,". Adds that"Iranian leaders are weighing all circumstances and the Islamic Republic's response might not be a repeat of previous operations, he added."

  • A delay to any response for the killing of Haniyeh has been widely priced in during the course of Gaza ceasefire talks.
  • Naini adds that 'Iran supports any move that leads to the end of the war and helps the people of Gaza'. Says that Tehran 'does not consider US actions [with regards to the ceasefire talks] sincere. It is a party in the war in Gaza'.
  • The previous direct retaliation from Iran against Israel in April took the form of a mass drone and missile attack. Israel's 'Iron Dome' defensive systems proved largely capable of repelling this attack. It remains to be seen whether an attack of a different nature - potentially involving Iranian proxies or allies in Lebanon, Yemen, Syria or Iraq - could prove more impactful.
  • The initial market jitters following Haniyeh's killing have now subsided, but given the likelihood of some form of response risking a regional escalation, these could spike again at short notice over the coming days, weeks, or months.
