ISRAEL: Axios-US Believes Israel-Hezbollah Ceasefire Deal Reached: Snr Official

ISRAEL

Axios reports that according to an unnamed senior US official, Israel and Hezbollah have come to an agreement on a ceasefire deal that will lead to a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon. Neither side has made any announcement yet. The Axios report comes after a flurry of speculation in the Israeli press on the evening of 24 Nov that PM Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli gov't had agreed on a deal 'in principle'. The official claims "We think we have a deal. We are on the goal line but we haven't passed it yet. The Israeli cabinet needs to approve the deal on Tuesday and something can always go wrong until then,

  • CNN reporting "Israel still has reservations over some details of the agreement, which were expected to be transmitted to the Lebanese government on Monday, the source said. Those and other details are still being negotiated and multiple sources stressed that the agreement will not be final until all issues are resolved. A ceasefire agreement will also need to be approved by the Israeli cabinet, which has not yet occurred."
  • A cessation in hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah would allow for at least a partial cooling in tensions in the Middle East. International focus would then turn more squarely towards pushing for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
