ISRAEL: Biden-Herzog Meeting Underway Shortly

US President Joe Biden is shortly due to begin a White House meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog. The meeting comes amid a fractured US-Israeli relationship over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hardline position on Palestine and judicial reforms which US officials claim will make Israel less democratic.

  • White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre will brief the press in around 20 mins: Livestream
  • Tensions eased slightly yesterday when Biden invited Netanyahu to the US, ending a months-long snub. No firm date has been set and it is unclear if the visit will be conducted at the White House.
  • In a call with Netanyahu yesterday, Biden reiterated, “in the context of...judicial reform... that shared democratic values have always been and must remain a hallmark of the U.S.-Israel relationship.”
  • Tomorrow, Herzog will deliver a joint address to a meeting of Congress which Punchbowl News report, "has shone a spotlight on fissures within the Democratic Party on how the United States should view its Middle Eastern partner.”
  • Market focus will be on any comments which suggest that the US can prod Israel to moderate the hardline policies which have caused months of political and economic volatility.
