ISRAEL: Gantz Puts Forward Bill To Dissolve Knesset, But Not Sufficient Votes

ISRAEL

Isralei media is reporting that the centrist National Unity party of security cabinet member Benny Gantz has put forward a bill seeking to dissolve the Knesset and bring about snap elections. This act could suggest that Gantz will leave the national unity gov't of PM Benjamin Netanyahu before the 8 June deadline that he set for the gov't to present a credible plan for its intentions for Gaza after the war.

  • Michael Horowitz at Le Beck International posts on X: "As of now, Gantz and the opposition do not have the votes necessary to pass such a bill, unless there are defections within Netanyahu's own coalition. The question is whether this is an effort to encourage such defections or Gantz does have an indication that there are already defectors? It might also be a gamble, with no real plan...Gantz has given Netanyahu a deadline (until June 8) to respond to six key demands. Netanyahu rejected the ultimatum moments after it was issued, and there were voices inside Gantz's own party who called to simply leave the government even ahead of the deadline."
  • Israel's Globes reports that the aim of Gantz's party is to hold elections in October of this year, marking the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attacks that killed over 1,200.
  • Opinion polling at present shows that National Unity would emerge as the largest single party if support was reflected in an election, with Netanyahu's right-wing Likud-led coalition losing its majority.
