MIDEAST: Israel likely heading back to the polls after Yisrael Beiteinu leader
Avigdor Lieberman states that he will not join in a minority government or
coalition with caretaker PM Benjamin Netanyahu or opposition leader Benny Gantz.
- Lieberman's nationalist Yisrael Beiteinu has sat as the potential kingmaker in
the deadlocked Knesset since the inconclusive 17 September general election.
- If called, the vote would be the third in 12 months. Neither Netenyahu's bloc
backed by Orthodox parties nor Gantz's opposition bloc supported by Arab parties
is showing any sign of winning over voters.
- Significant uptick in violence between Israel and surrounding areas in recent
days, with rocket attacks from Gaza being met by Israeli air strikes on
Palestinian targets in Gaza and Iranian targets in Syria.
- A sustained military offensive could boost Netanyahu's chances of winning a
snap poll given his hard line stance on defence issues.
