MIDEAST: -ISRAEL: The Israeli High Court last night rejected a series of
petitions that sought to bar PM Benjamin Netanyahu from forming a gov't due to
his impending trial on corruption charges.
- The court's decision opens the way for Netanyahu to serve a record fifth term
in office as part of a ground-breaking political union with his main opponent in
the three general elections Israel have held in the last 13 months, Benny Gantz.
- As part of the agreement Netanyahu will serve as PM for 18 months with Gantz
as deputy/alternate PM at which point they will swap offices.
- The lifespan of this arrangement is dependent on the outcome of Netanyahu's
trial for bribery, fraud, and breach of trust is set to start on May 24, just
days after he takes the oath of office on May 13.
