ISRAEL: Unconfirmed Rumours Hamas Ldr Sinwar Killed In Strike, IDF Investigating

ISRAEL

There is intense speculation that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar has been killed in fighting in the Gaza Strip. The IDF has released an announcement saying "Initial report - During IDF operations in the Gaza Strip, three terrorists were eliminated. The IDF and ISA are checking the possibility that one of the terrorists was Yahya Sinwar. At this stage, the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed,"

  • Sinwar's death would, if confirmed, mark the second elimination of a Hamas leader following the killing of Ismail Haniyeh in a targeted assassination in Tehran in July. Alongside the late Haniyeh, Sinwar is the most high-ranking and senior official within Hamas.
  • As has been the case in Lebanon with Israel's effective targeting of senior Hezbollah commanders (including leader Hassan Nasrallah) the killing of the group's leaders does not necessarily indicate an end to the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, but it severely limits both groups' abilities to conduct effective counterattacks against advances by the IDF.
  • Should Sinwar's death be confirmed attention will also shift towards any potential retaliation by Hamas' supporter, Iran. The invasion of Lebanon and the killing of Nasrallah saw Iran launch ballistic missiles at Israel, strikes that Israel has pledged to respond to.
