Israeli PM To Give Statement Amid Talk Of Snap Poll: IPBC

MIDEAST

Amichai Stein of the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (IPBC) tweets: "Israel PM Netanyahu will give a statement at 15:00 JLM [0800ET, 1300GMT, 1400CET] time amid talks of possible early elections. In the two days, the knesset will vote on a bill to dissolve the knesset"

  • The gov't is currently made up of PM Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party and the Blue and White coalition led by Netanyahu's erstwhile opponent Benny Gantz.
  • In a power-sharing agreement reached in the spring of 2020, Netanyahu serves as PM until Nov 2021, when Gantz takes over.

  • The right-wing Yamina coalition has soared in opinion polls, and is led by former minister Naftali Bennett, who served for several years in coalition Cabinets under Likud. Should a snap poll be called, there is the prospect of Likud, Yamina, and another right-wing party forming a coalition gov't that excludes centrists and moderates in the form of Blue and White, and the Yesh Atid-Telem party that broke away from Blue and White in March.
