Italian Industrial Production Slumps

ITALY JAN SA IND OUTPUT -3.4% M/M (DEC RVSD DN -1.1% M/M); WDA -2.6%Y/Y

  • Italian industrial production saw a significant decline in the January reading, slipping -3.4% m/m (-0.5% expected, -1.1%r prior).
  • In the annualised readings, a fall of -2.6% y/y was recorded for January, which is a fall of 7.4 points from December and 5.8 points below forecast.
  • This brings Italian industrial output to 1.9% below the pre-pandemic February 2020 level.
  • Energy goods saw the steepest decline, with production dipping -5.2% m/m, followed by consumer goods (-3.6% m/m) and intermediate goods (-3.4% m/m).
