Italy Looking to Increase Gas Supply from Africa: Eni

NATURAL GAS

Italy can significantly increase gas imports from Africa and send supply to northern Europe with infrastructure improvements in the next few years according to Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi.

  • Italy imports gas via the TransMed pipeline from Algeria, a pipeline from Libya and LNG imports from Egypt, Angola, Congo Republic and Mozambique.
  • Eni and Sonatrach on Monday agreed to study joint projects to improve Algeria's energy export capacity. Algeria was the biggest gas supplier to Italy last year.
  • "We are the only ones to have a connection with Algeria... which has a capacity of about 36bcm of gas and is still under-utilised. There are still more than 10bcm that can reach Italy," said Descalzi.
  • "We have a connection with Libya that is now worth about 12-14bcm in terms of capacity, which can go up with adequate compression additions of several billion," Descalzi added.
  • Italy is also looking to double the Trans Adriatic Pipeline capacity, importing Azeri gas, to 20bcm.
