Italy PM-We Will Bring Energy Price Issue To EUCO Table

EUROPEAN COUNCIL

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni speaking to the country's Senate, stating that she will 'bring the energy price issue to the table' at the European Council summit taking place tomorrow in Brussels. Livestream: https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1dRKZMkkYBQxB

  • Speaking to the Chamber of Deputies on 13 Dec, Meloni continued her recent efforts to assuage EU concerns about the potential eurosceptic intentions of her gov't, stating that "In the past we have always wondered if in Italy there should be more or less Europe. The goal of our Government, however, is that there is more Italy in Europe, directing the latter towards a more attentive approach to the needs of citizens, families and businesses."
  • Meloni's comments on energy prices come hours after EU energy ministers failed to reach an agreement on the gas price cap. Despite Meloni's efforts to bring up the issue at the EUCO summit, it is unlikely that a decision will be reached at the leaders' meeting.
  • Energy Ministers will meet once again on 19 Dec in an effort to reach a final agreement between those in favour of a lower cap (including Italy) and those concerned a low cap will risk a shortfall in gas supply from international markets (Germany, Netherlands).
