Jan Consumer Confidence Highest Since Sep '21

TURKEY JAN CONSUMER CONFIDENCE 79.1; DEC 75.6

  • Turkish consumer confidence improved by +4.6% m/m in January to 79.1- the highest level since September '21.
  • Solid improvements across current and expected household financial situations and the general economic situation boosted the index.
  • This is likely underpinned by the over-20pp fall in headline CPI to +64.3% y/y as base-effects filter in and the slower monthly rate of +1.2% m/m in December.
  • Despite the improvements, actual spending on durables 12-month outlooks weakened further, implying that the uptick in optimism will unlikely translate into a boost in consumer spending.
  • Looking at the backcasted modelled series by TurkStat, the Turkish consumer confidence indicator has not passed the 100-point optimism threshold since 2006.
