Jan Industrial Production Above Expected

  • Industrial production in January rose 0.9% when markets had expected a gain of 0.4%. December's 1.6% increase was revised down to 1.3%.
  • January capacity utilization rose to 75.6%, above expectations of 74.8%. December capacity utilization was revised higher to 74.9% from 74.5%.
  • Manufacturing output rose 1% in January, about the same as its average gain over the previous five months. Durable manufacturing was up 0.9% while nondurable manufacturing was up 1.2%.
  • Capacity utilization for manufacturing was up 0.7% in January.
  • Utilities output fell 1.2% in January, driven by a 5.7% decline in Natural gas utilities.
