Japan Aug Core CPI +2.8% Y/Y; Energy Price +12.0% Y/Y

  • Japan's national average core consumer price index (excluding fresh food) rose 2.8% from the year earlier in August, picking up from the growth of 2.7% marked in July.
  • Energy rose 12.0% y/y, the same as the growth registered in the previous month.
  • The underlying inflation rate measured by the core-core CPI (excluding fresh food and energy) increased 2.0% y/y, quicker than the 1.9% growth last month.
  • Prices for ex-perishables rose 2.9% y/y, higher than the 2.6% y/y increase in July.
  • Prices for household spending rose 7.7% y/y, up from the 5.2% y/y increase reported last month, and prices for accommodation increase 9.5% y/y, down from the previous 10.3% rise.
