Japan Insurers to Continue Marine War Risk Cover: Kyodo

Japanese non-life insurance companies will continue to offer war risk coverage for vessels in Russian waters in Jan according to Kyodo.

  • Japan is facing a challenge in securing vital LNG supplies from Russia after Western reinsurers said they would halt marine war insurance for ships travelling in Russian waters from 1 Jan.
  • Insurers told shipowners last week of a halt the cover which would potentially impact the ability to import LNG from Sakhalin-2.
  • Japan receives 9% of its imported LNG from Sakhalin-2, which is owned by Gazprom.
