Japan Jan Inflation Quickened; +4.2% Y/Y

  • Japan's national average core consumer price index (excluding fresh food) rose 4.2% from the year earlier in January, faster than the 4.0% growth marked in December, marking the 18th increasing month.
  • Energy rose 14.6% y/y, slower from the previous 15.2% y/y growth, contributing 1.17 percentage points to CPI.
  • The underlying inflation rate measured by the core-core CPI (excluding fresh food and energy) increased 3.2% y/y, expanding from the 3.0% growth last month.
  • Prices for ex-perishables rose 7.5% y/y, the same as the growth registered in December.
  • Prices for household spending rose 11.1% y/y, quicker than the 10.8% y/y growth reported in December, and prices for accommodation fell 3.0% y/y, easing from the previous 18.0% drop.
